What is “Pass through rate?”
Pass through rate is the best possible rate for processing a credit card at the time it is presented (whether over the phone, online or at the counter). Large retail giants such as Macy’s and Wal-Mart often command these special rates. Jetpay basically “pass-through-the rate” charged to them by the credit card company, plus 0.5%. no hidden fees and no extras.
Typically most Gateways and local Reps offer a “blended rate”, which is often not a good thing for the following reasons:
- Blended rates look at the rate charged by all of the cards, Discover, MasterCard, Visa, Amex Diners Club ect.
- Visa and Mastercard charge the lowest rates for processing their cards
- Blended rates take into account the other card fees to make sure they do not lose on the 30% or so that are not Visa or Mastercard
- Result….. you often lose out, pass through rates are always the best way to go as they are real-time processing rates
- Over 70% of cards processed are Visa / Mastercard

What else can influence the “pass through rate?”
All credit card companies are reliant on certain factors to calculate what rate they ultimately charge for any transaction. When this matrix is understood, merchants can often dramatically lower their credit card fees. It’s all about security – the more information provided at the time of the transaction, the lower perceived risk exposure by the credit card company and the lower charge to the merchant.
Customer facing – live person in front of a teller, swiped card – all information is gathered, signature can be verified on the spot and extra picture identification maybe requested = lowest pass through rate possible.
Over the phone transaction – not in person = higher risk. If full name, address, zip CVV number are not collected the risk is even higher and the rate goes up.

Hotels, Inns and B&Bs can access great rates too when the RezCollect module is used through the front desk system because we can pass even more information effortlessly, such as check in an check out times, folio number and other reservation related data that lessons the perceived risk for the credit card company and the processor.
Processing and Authorization
